Future of Europe debate concludes without action at Sibiu EU summit

Europe’s prime ministers met today in Sibiu, Romania, for a largely symbolic summit intended to renew commitment on the ‘issues that really matter to people‘.

They are members of three political blocs - the European Conservatives and Reformists, Europe for Freedom and Direct Democracy, and Europe of Nations and Freedom, as well as a number of 'non-attached' MEPs who don't sit with any bloc.

21 civil society organisations and unions today launched #ElectNoHate, a joint call for EU elections campaigning free from hate speech and divisive rhetoric, which legitimise hateful actions and pose a threat to human rights.

MEP candidates, politicians, the media and those in the public eye are asked not only to avoid engaging in, or amplifying, rhetoric that may incite discrimination, prejudice or hatred on any grounds, but also to actively counter it.

Since 2015, Zelena akcija/Friends of the Earth Croatia has been involved in the national Refugees Welcome Initiative. Together they have been organising numerous activities to fight increasing xenophobia in the media and public on one hand, and police border violence towards refugees, criminalisation of solidarity and human rights activists on the other. In a joint guerrilla action last week, refugees' testimonies shook up Zagreb's citizens.
