Energy savings The cheapest, cleanest, safest energy is the energy we don’t actually need

7 September 2017

The European Parliament's environment committee today backed strong energy efficiency targets, acknowledging the numerous benefits of saving energy and demonstrating a clear commitment to the Paris climate agreement.

MEPs on the committee voted on a crucial file of the EU's 'Clean Energy Package' to tackle climate change up to 2030.

On the Energy Efficiency Directive the committee supported a target of 40% energy savings by 2030 and a strengthened annual energy savings target.

Friends of the Earth Europe has criticised EU governments for adopting weak energy efficiency targets today. The decision demonstrates a lack of commitment to the Paris climate change Agreement, according to the group.

EU Ministers have agreed to the European Commission's proposed target of 30% energy efficiency by 2030, when climate action requires at least 40%.

Using less energy is the best way to cut CO2 emissions, oil and gas imports, and energy bills. This is why Friends of the Earth Europe is calling for binding EU energy saving targets. Binding targets are the only way to make sure governments cut energy use and people get all the benefits of energy savings.
